CoreWeave bond sell-off pressures neocloud shares and AI valuations

A rout in CoreWeave debt is dragging neocloud stocks lower and widening the valuation gap between OpenAI and Anthropic, per reports.

What happened

A sell-off in CoreWeave bonds has put the market's arithmetic on the AI buildout under scrutiny. The move in the company's debt has coincided with weakness across neocloud equities, the listed providers of rented AI computing capacity.

A report says that the same sell-off is feeding through to how investors value the leading private AI model developers, with the spread between OpenAI and Anthropic widening as neocloud stocks decline.

Why it matters

The AI datacentre buildout is financed in large part with debt, so the price investors demand to hold that debt is a live read on how much capacity the market believes can be funded and filled. When bond prices fall, the cost of financing new capacity is reassessed, and that reassessment tends to travel quickly to the equities of the companies doing the building and to the chip and power suppliers behind them.

AI-linked names carry heavy weight in US equity benchmarks, so a repricing in this corner of credit can show up at the index level rather than staying contained in single stocks. Crypto often trades alongside high-beta technology risk, and gold and the dollar can draw attention when investors reposition between risk assets and defensive holdings.

What to watch

Further pricing in CoreWeave's bonds and the read-across to other neocloud shares, plus any further shift in the reported valuation spread between OpenAI and Anthropic as the sell-off develops.
