What happened

US Treasury yields were broadly lower across maturities on Tuesday morning. The move followed the previous session, in which yields had climbed to fresh highs.

The pullback in yields came alongside a slide in oil prices.

Why it matters

Government bond yields are a core reference point for global pricing. When yields retreat, the relative return on holding dollars and dollar-denominated debt shifts, which is a channel through which the currency market and non-yielding assets such as gold are commonly affected. Equity valuations are also sensitive to the discount rate implied by long-dated Treasuries, so broad yield moves tend to show up in index pricing.

Crude is one of the inputs that feeds into inflation expectations, and inflation expectations in turn feed into the yield curve. That makes energy prices and bond yields closely watched together, and it links oil, rates, the dollar and risk assets within the same set of moves. The direction of any of these markets is not implied by the move itself.

What to watch

The article does not name upcoming data releases, central bank decisions or speakers. Attention stays on the path of oil prices and on whether Treasury yields hold below the highs reached in the prior session.
